Normally, the due date for filing US tax return for expats is April 15th of the next year. However, if you are a US citizen or a resident alien residing overseas, you are allowed an automatic 2 month extension. This means you can file your return by June 15th of the next year. Even if you qualify for the extension but are still unable to file your return till the extended date, you can request an additional 4 month extension (till October 15) by filing Form 4868 which is the application for automatic extension. This form will have to be filed before June 15th.
However, extension of time for filing return does not extend the time for paying taxes. All taxes due will have to be paid by April 15th. Penalties for late payment of taxes will be assessed from the extended due date of payment .
